Job Title: Assistant Landscape Architect

Salary: Master Pay Scale Point 18 to Master Pay Scale Point 27 (Currently $22,910 to $34,895 per month)

Entry Requirements: Candidates should - (a) have a degree/diploma in Landscape Architecture or a qualification which is acceptable to the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects (HKILA) as satisfying the academic requirements for admission into the HKILA Examination; and (b) have at least two years’ post-qualification practical training and/or experience satisfying the training requirements for professional membership of the HKILA; and (c) have ‘Level 1’ results in the two language papers (Use of Chinese and Use of English) in the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE). A pass result in the Aptitude Test in the CRE is also required. (See Notes)

Notes: Candidates’ results in the Aptitude Test (AT) paper are classified as pass or fail, while the results of the Use of Chinese (UC) and Use of English (UE) papers are classified as ‘Level 2’, ‘Level 1’ or ‘Fail’, with ‘Level 2’ being the highest. Grade ‘C’ or above and Grade ‘D’ in Use of English of the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE), or equivalent, are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the UE paper of the CRE. Grade ‘C’ or above and Grade ‘D’ in Chinese Language and Culture or Chinese Language and Literature of the HKALE are accepted as equivalent to ‘Level 2’ and ‘Level 1’ results respectively in the UC paper of the CRE. Applicants with an overall band of 6.5 or above with no subtest score below band 6 obtained in the same sitting in the Academic Module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) within the two-year validity period of the test are considered as having met the English language proficiency requirement (item (c) of entry requirements) of the Landscape Architect and Assistant Landscape Architect posts. The IELTS test result must be valid on the starting day of the application period, i.e. 26 January 2008.

Duties: An Assistant Landscape Architect is mainly deployed on – (a) undertaking on-the-job training with a view to gaining experience in the planning, design and construction of public open spaces and landscape-related projects; and (b) assisting Professional Supervisor-in-charge in: (i) investigating and assessing the potential use of all types of open spaces; (ii) planning, designing and supervising the construction of public open spaces and landscape-related projects; (iii) performing project management duties including the administration of contract and consultants in outsourced projects; and (iv) providing professional advice on landscape-related matters. (Note: May be posted to other bureaux/departments.)

Terms of Appointment: Successful candidates will be appointed on civil service probationary terms for three years. Upon passage of probation bar, the officer may be appointed on a 3-year agreement prior to consideration for appointment on the prevailing permanent terms.
