Job Summary:
This position is responsible for the delivery of quality, holistic, resident care through the administration and supervision of the Nursing Program and staff in a designated area.
Statement of Qualifications:
Nursing Diploma or Baccalaureate of Nursing (BScN).
One to two years related experience, preferably in a geriatric-gerontology or long-term care setting.
Registered Nurse (College of Nurses of Ontario).
The successful candidate will be required to complete a Police Record Check to the City of Ottawa's satisfaction.
Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability, may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
Knowledge of:
Principles of verbal and non-verbal communication.
Scope and purpose of gerontological nursing and functions/activities related to the nursing process.
Age related changes.
Ethical dilemmas and considerations.
Management of common chronic problems.
Specific needs of the older person: Basic Physiological Needs (nutrition, elimination, hygiene, skin integrity, Sleep & Rest, sensory perception), Dementia Care, Safety and Security Needs, Challenging Behaviours; Basic Psychosocial Needs (Self-Esteem, Actualization, Advocacy, support network, relationships with families).
Specific needs of the cognitively impaired older person.
Basic knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations such as Regulated Health Professions Act, Health Care Consent Act, Nursing Act, Mental Health Act, Professional Misconduct and Controlled Act, Professional standards, Code of Ethics.
Infection Control Guidelines for RN’s and RPN’s.
Medication Administration Standards.
Nursing Documentation Standards.
Principles of rehabilitation and activation in care of the older persons or adults requiring long term care.
Pharmacology and medication use.
Nursing goals: promotion, prevention, maintenance, rehabilitation, palliation.
Transfer and positioning techniques of persons requiring long term care.
Labour Relations and collective agreements.
Competencies and Skills:
Manage a long term care unit according to professional standards and “outcome-based” criteria.
Demonstrate leadership skills.
Direct, teach and evaluate staff.
Assess resident physical, spiritual, mental, psycho-social, cultural, cognitive, functional, developmental and economic life style.
Organize and prioritize workload.
Maintain confidentiality and its application to resident records.
Communicate and work effectively with residents, families and staff from other disciplines and services.
Manage time effectively.
Operate a computer to input and access data using word-processing, spreadsheet and electronic mail applications.
Effective problem solving strategies.
Excellent interpersonal & communication skills with residents, families, colleagues and staff.
Strong organizational skills.
Proven competence in medication administration.
Flexible, patient, creative, reliable.

Language:
Oral fluency, reading and writing ability in English.
